The SC has ordered the Supertech Towers to be demolished
The SC has ordered the Supertech Towers to be demolished in 2 weeks.
The Supreme Court announced today that demolition of real estate developer Supertech's unlawfully raised twin 40-story skyscrapers in Noida will commence in two weeks. The court has ordered the Noida Authority to call a meeting of all relevant agencies within 72 hours and finalise the demolition schedule for the Emerald Court.
"The CEO Noida shall take all necessary steps for observing directions of this court," a bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant said. "Work on demolition shall commence no later than two weeks from this order."
The proposal for the demolition agency finalised by the Noida Authority was approved by the Supreme Court on January 17. Supertech was given a week to sign a deal with the agency "Edifice."
The court had previously chastised the builder for failing to comply with its orders to demolish the twin towers in Noida's Sector 93, and warned that its directors would face jail time for "playing truant with the court."
The real estate mogul had advised the court that a safe demolition process would take longer than the three months allocated.
The Supreme Court has also ordered Supertech to repay all homebuyers who have reserved units in the twin tower project by February 28 with interest.
When hearing home buyer petitions, the bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Bela Trivedi observed, "Don't make them come to the court with contempt petitions."
The real estate firm was accused of illegally constructing two 40-story towers at the Emerald Court housing complex. More than 900 new apartments and 21 new stores were built as part of the expansion.
