Trinamool Congress leaders detained during peaceful protest

Many leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were detained by Delhi Police on Monday during a peaceful 24-hour 'dharna' outside the Election Commission of India (ECI) office.

Calls for change and allegations

The TMC members, including Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhale, and Sagarika Ghose, were demanding changes in the chiefs of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), National Investigation Agency (NIA), and Income Tax department.

"We have appealed to the Election Commission to change the chiefs of NIA, CBI, ED, and Income Tax, and we are sitting on a 24-hour peaceful protest with this demand," Sen stated while speaking to reporters. The TMC accused central agencies of targeting opposition parties under the BJP-led Centre's direction, calling for a fair playing field for all political parties.

Allegations of misuse

The Mamata Banerjee-led party alleged an "unholy alliance" between the NIA and the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. This allegation came after an incident where a team of NIA officials was attacked by a mob during an arrest operation in West Bengal. Banerjee accused the NIA of assaulting villagers, which the NIA denied, stating its actions were lawful.

The Trinamool Congress vowed to resist any unconstitutional attempts to harm democracy, emphasizing their commitment to take necessary steps against such activities. This series of events reflects the ongoing tension between the TMC and central agencies, highlighting concerns about fair electoral practices and the role of investigative bodies in the political landscape.
