Travel ban on Yoon in Martial Law probe

South Korea imposes travel ban on President Yoon amid Martial Law investigation

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is under scrutiny for his recent declaration of martial law. On December 9, the nation’s anti-corruption chief ordered a travel ban on Yoon while police investigate allegations of rebellion related to his actions last week.

The political turmoil began on Tuesday when Yoon imposed martial law, deploying armed special forces in Seoul. This decision caused significant unrest, with opposition parties calling it an “unconstitutional and illegal coup.” Although Yoon avoided impeachment on Sunday due to insufficient votes, opposition lawmakers have vowed to file another petition soon.

Investigations and Arrests

Authorities are examining the role of several individuals, including Yoon and former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, in the martial law decision. On Sunday, Kim became the first person arrested in connection with the case. Additionally, three senior military officers accused of supporting martial law have been suspended.

Opposition parties filed legal complaints against at least nine people, accusing them of rebellion. While presidents in South Korea are generally immune from prosecution, exceptions exist for serious charges like treason or rebellion.

Yoon has apologized for his actions, stating he will face any political or legal consequences. Since taking office in 2022, he has faced challenges such as an opposition-controlled parliament, low approval ratings, and scandals involving himself and his wife. His martial law announcement, in which he referred to parliament as a “den of criminals,” has further deepened divisions within the country.

The situation remains tense, with South Korea’s political future hanging in the balance. As investigations continue, the nation is grappling with questions about democracy, governance, and accountability at the highest level of leadership.
