British Journalist pays heartfelt tribute to Former PM Manmohan Singh

In a touching tribute, British journalist and economic commentator Martin Wolf commemorated the late Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former prime minister, as one of the most significant policymakers of our era. Writing for the Financial Times, Wolf’s piece, titled “An Economically Dynamic India is Manmohan Singh’s Greatest Legacy,” praised Singh’s vision, achievements, and unwavering commitment to public service. Singh passed away in December 2024 at the age of 92, leaving behind a profound legacy that shaped modern India.

Celebrated for visionary leadership

Wolf, who first met Singh in 1974 when he was a senior economist at the World Bank’s India Division and Singh was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Indian government, described him as an “intelligent and honourable” leader. “He was one of the greatest men I have known,” wrote Wolf. Singh’s intellectual rigor and openness to diverse ideas set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

Known for his humility and courteous demeanor, Singh remained untainted by the political and financial scandals that often marred Indian politics. Despite the pressures of public life, he upheld his integrity and focused on economic reforms that propelled India’s growth. Wolf recalled former US President Barack Obama’s admiration for Singh, noting how he once remarked, “When the prime minister speaks, the world listens.”

Achievements in governance

Singh’s tenure as prime minister is remembered for transformative policy initiatives, including the landmark Indo-US nuclear deal, which bolstered India’s global standing. His administration also launched the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, providing millions of rural Indians with job security and economic stability. Another milestone was the Aadhaar program, a unique identification system that revolutionized governance and public service delivery.

Wolf highlighted Singh’s belief in democracy and public service. “He thought India could not survive without a thriving democracy,” Wolf noted. Singh’s ability to collaborate with talented colleagues and earn the trust of power brokers at critical junctures in India’s history was pivotal. A paper by the Mercatus Center aptly described him as “India’s finest talent scout,” acknowledging his knack for assembling and leading capable teams.
