Truck crash kills 10 in New Orleans
Tragedy in New Orleans: truck plows into crowd, killing at least 10
At least ten people lost their lives, and thirty others were injured when a truck rammed into a large crowd at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Wednesday. The horrific incident occurred during New Year’s Eve celebrations. According to NOLA Ready, the city’s emergency preparedness agency, the injured were rushed to five different hospitals for treatment.
The New Orleans Police Department shared initial reports suggesting a vehicle plowed into the group, but details about the driver or motive remain unclear. Witnesses told CBS News that the truck was speeding before crashing into the crowd. Some even reported that the driver exited the vehicle and began firing a weapon, prompting police to return fire.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry described the event as “a horrific act of violence” and urged the public to stay away from the scene while investigations continue.

Recurring concerns over public safety in New Orleans
This is not the first time New Orleans has faced tragedies involving vehicles or violence during public celebrations. Just last year, two people were killed, and ten others were injured in two shootings during a parade. Similarly, in 2017, a heavily intoxicated man drove his pickup truck into a Mardi Gras parade crowd, leaving over 20 people injured.
The recent incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety in the city, particularly during large gatherings and celebrations. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the latest tragedy to determine the circumstances and prevent future occurrences.
