Donald Trump delivered his first speech since a recent assassination attempt at the Republican National Convention on Thursday. The former president, now the Republican presidential nominee, spoke to a supportive crowd in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He promised an "incredible victory" in the upcoming November election and vowed to be a president for all Americans.
Trump talks about surviving the attack
Trump recounted the frightening incident where a 20-year-old man shot at him, causing a slight injury to his ear and killing a bystander. He described the moment, saying, “If I had not moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be with you tonight.” He expressed gratitude, saying he felt safe because he had God on his side. Trump, sporting a bandage over his ear, emphasized the role of divine intervention in his survival, calling it a "providential moment."
Unity and support at the convention
The crowd at the convention greeted Trump with chants of “USA” and showed strong support. The event featured warm-up acts like 1980s wrestling icon Hulk Hogan and far-right media figure Tucker Carlson, who praised Trump’s resilience. Despite past scandals and legal issues, Trump appeared confident and focused on his return to power.
As Trump looks ahead to the election, his rival Joe Biden faces challenges within his own party. Reports suggest that Biden might be pressured to withdraw due to concerns about his health. Trump’s advisor, Jason Miller, mentioned that Biden's potential withdrawal wouldn't change Trump's strategy.
Trump’s family was present at the convention, with his son Eric energizing the crowd. However, his wife Melania, who has mostly stayed out of the campaign, attended but did not speak. Trump’s speech marked a significant moment in his campaign as he aims for a comeback in the 2024 election.
