Tulika Maan urges India to increase Judoka representation for Olympics

Tulika Maan calls for more Indian Judokas ahead of Olympics 2024

Tulika Maan, the 25-year-old judoka from Delhi, is gearing up for her debut at the Paris Olympics after securing a quota earlier this year. Her journey to this milestone began with winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, which solidified her spot in the Olympics.

Preparation amidst excitement and anxiety

As the Olympics draw near, Tulika is deep into her training regime. Currently in Valencia, Spain, for intensive preparations, she will soon head to Paris for a specialized training camp before her first match on August 2. Reflecting on her qualification, Tulika shared her mix of emotions—excitement, fear, and anxiety—knowing all eyes will be on her as India's sole representative in judo at the Games.

Tulika faces formidable competition in the +78kg category, notably from athletes like Su Xin of China and Akira Sone of Japan, an Olympic champion. Despite the tough competition, Tulika remains focused on giving her best performance.

Motivation beyond personal achievement

For Tulika, being the lone Indian judoka at the Olympics is not just about personal achievement but also about a missed opportunity for team representation. She believes having more Indian judokas would enhance team spirit and support, similar to her experience at the Commonwealth Games, where camaraderie among teammates fueled their performances.

Tulika credits her mother for her unwavering support throughout her judo career, especially during financially challenging times when they funded her competitive tournaments themselves. Her mother's role has been pivotal in her journey to becoming an Olympian, providing the foundation and encouragement needed to excel in the sport.

To maintain mental composure amidst the pressures of elite competition, Tulika practices Yoga, particularly Shavasana, a relaxation pose that helps her stay centered and focused. This mental discipline, coupled with rigorous physical training, forms her strategy to perform at her peak during the Olympics.

Tulika Maan's story is not just one of personal achievement but also of resilience, family support, and dedication to her sport. As she prepares to represent India on the global stage, her journey inspires aspiring athletes and underscores the importance of perseverance in achieving Olympic dreams.
