AAP Government celebrates two years: free power drives populist agenda in Punjab

Since its implementation in July 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party's promise of providing 300 units of free power per month has significantly impacted Punjab residents, with 88% of consumers benefiting, amounting to ₹11,500 crore in savings.

Relief for consumers:

Nearly 90% of households in Punjab received zero electricity bills last month, out of a total of 38 lakh consumers billed by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), with 33.5 lakh consumers enjoying this benefit. Residents like Kanti, 54, from Mandiala village in Amritsar district, express relief as they haven't paid any electricity bills since the scheme's initiation.

Impact and financial allocation:

The scheme, lauded as a flagship initiative, has been implemented only in Delhi and Punjab, garnering support from Chief Ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann. However, concerns arise regarding the financial burden, with a proposed power subsidy bill of ₹20,477 crore for 2024-25 compared to previous years. Despite criticism, the Punjab government emphasizes its commitment to the scheme, highlighting investments in power infrastructure and the purchase of a thermal plant at a record low price.
