Typhoon Yagi hits Vietnam, 1 dead

Super Typhoon Yagi strikes Vietnam, leaving destruction in its wake; 1 confirmed dead

Super Typhoon Yagi, with winds exceeding 230 kilometers per hour, has caused widespread destruction as it hit northern Vietnam on Saturday. The typhoon uprooted thousands of trees, swept ships and boats out to sea, and killed at least one person. It previously left at least 23 dead in southern China and the Philippines.

Yagi struck Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces with winds over 149 kilometers per hour. In Hai Duong province, a man was killed when strong winds toppled a tree. Hai Phong saw streets littered with debris, including fallen trees and damaged buildings.

Severe impact across the region

In southern China, Typhoon Yagi killed three people and injured 95 after hitting Hainan and Guangdong provinces. The storm also caused significant damage on Co To island in Vietnam, where winds unroofed buildings and snapped electrical lines.

Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged evacuations from dangerous areas and advised residents to stay indoors. About 20,000 people have been moved to safer locations, and more than 457,000 personnel have been mobilized for rescue and relief efforts.

Heavy rains and strong winds have continued across northern Vietnam, including in Hanoi, leading to the closure of four airports and a ban on sailing. Yagi's effects also included flooding and landslides in the Philippines before it intensified into a super typhoon.

The storm highlights a troubling trend, as typhoons in the region are forming closer to the coast, intensifying faster, and staying over land longer due to climate change.
