Uber company will evaluate accepting Bitcoin from users

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, stated on Thursday that the ridesharing business is open to accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment.

“Just like we accept various kinds of local currencies, we are going to look at cryptocurrency and/or Bitcoin in terms of currency to transact,” he said of Uber’s plans to embrace Bitcoin as a payment option on CNBC’s “ Squawk Box.”

That’s excellent for business, good for our riders, and good for our customers, so we’ll definitely have a look at it,” Khosrowshahi stated.

And if there is a benefit, if there is a need, we will do it; we just won’t do it as part of a campaign,” he added.

The comments came only one day after Twitter’s CFO told “Squawk Box” that the company was considering adding Bitcoin to its balance sheet.

Cryptocurrencies have recently grabbed headlines, especially when an Elon Musk tweetstorm boosted the value of alternative cryptocurrency DogeCoin. BNY Mellon is now holding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin for its asset-management customers, according to The Wall Street Journal.

While Bitcoin has reached new highs this year, much of the current boom can be attributed to Tesla, which raised the cryptocurrency’s value in February after announcing that it would begin taking Bitcoin as payment and that it had purchased $1.5 billion worth of the cryptocurrency. As a result, according to Insider, Bitcoin reached an all-time high of $44,795.20.

Uber has yet to use the technology due to the high cost of exchanges, which can carry high transaction fees, and the environmental impact of digital mining on the electrical grid, according to Khosrowshahi.

“We’re always having dialogues,” Khosrowshahi remarked. “I believe you will see us leaning more into crypto as the exchange mechanism gets less expensive and more ecologically friendly.”
