Ukraine sought India's backing to fight against Russian military
Ukraine asked India for help on thursday in fighting the Russian military who had invaded the eastern European country earlier in the day. Dr. Igor Polikha, Ukraine's ambassador to India, made an emotional appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, "I don't know how many world leaders Putin may listen to but the status of Modi Ji makes me hopeful. In the case of his strong voice, Putin at least should think over it. We are expecting for much more favourable attitude of the Indian government."
Ukraine has appealed to India for assistance in defending its territory against Russian aggression. He further said, “At the present moment, we're asking and pleading for support of India. In this case of an aggression by a totalitarian regime against democratic state, India should fully assume its global role. Modi ji is one of the most powerful and respected leaders in the world.”
At a UN Security Council meeting earlier in the day, India urged for a total de-escalation between Russia and Ukraine, as Putin's forces targeted military command centers in Ukraine's capital Kyiv and Kharkiv.
India's permanent representative to the United Nations, TS Trimurti, said "The situation is in danger of spiraling into a major crisis. If not handled carefully, it may undermine security. The security of all parties should be taken into account."
Remember that Russia praised India's approach to the ongoing Ukrainian conflict yesterday. “We welcome the independent position India has taken in the UN Security Council twice already [and] which was expressed openly by the Indian external affairs minister and other officials.”
Nearly about 200000 Russian troops have also been deployed on Ukraine's border
Roman Babushkin, the Russian charge d'affaires, has stated.
Dr. Igor Polikha also stated that the war on Ukraine began this morning. “It's a case of blatant aggression which started at 5 o'clock in the morning. We have confirmed information that a lot of Ukrainian aerodromes, military airports, military installations were attacked by bombs & missile attacks,” Dr. Igor Polikha said.
Ambassador of Ukraine to India added, “We have first civilian casualties even on the outskirts of the capital. There's fighting in some areas. According to info of our Ministry of Defence, Ukrainian side shot down 5 Russian fighter planes, 2 helicopters, we destroyed 2 tanks & several trucks.”
He went on to say that Russian troops had targeted multiple locations in Ukraine.
“Some attacks happened on outskirts of capital. Some attacks happened deep inside the territory of Ukraine. We're getting the first information about casualties among our soldiers & among civilian population.”
India is one of the few countries that has not condemned Putin's actions in Ukraine, which have ranged from amassing soldiers near the border to commencing military action. New Delhi, on the other hand, has been adamant about de-escalation. India is the only member of the Quad alliance that does not have sanctions in place. Sanctions have been imposed by Australia, the United States, and Japan.
