UP plans AI-driven push for e-governance

UP to boost e-governance with AI integration for better digital services

The Uttar Pradesh government is working towards making e-governance more efficient by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) in its system. As part of this initiative, government officers and staff members are being trained in AI to help them manage administrative work better. AI is expected to make governance faster and smarter by assisting with tasks such as drafting and translating official letters, summarizing long documents, and simplifying complex matters for better understanding.

Training program for officers

The training program is currently in its early stages and is mainly taking place in the state secretariat. Government officials have confirmed that AI training is being conducted in a structured manner, with a three-tier system introduced for senior and middle-level officers. The one-day training session is designed for deputy secretaries, undersecretaries, joint secretaries, section officers, review officers, and assistant review officers. So far, approximately 900 to 1000 personnel have been trained in about 62 batches.

Neha Jain, the special secretary of IT and the state coordinator for e-governance in Uttar Pradesh, stated that the training focuses on responsible AI usage. It teaches officers how AI can be used to handle government work more efficiently while ensuring ethical use. The initiative is seen as a step towards improving the overall governance system through digital transformation.

Several government officers who participated in the training program have praised the initiative. They believe AI can help them create better notes and summaries for official files. Many officials already use AI tools in their personal lives and are now looking forward to applying similar technology in their professional work. AI is expected to reduce manual workload and increase accuracy in document handling.

The training program also includes a focus on cybersecurity, ensuring that government staff members are aware of data protection and safe AI usage. The program is being run in collaboration with Microsoft, which has provided training under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. The state’s IT department has provided technical support, and the training is currently being held in a computer lab at the Bapu Bhawan Secretariat. The government plans to extend the training to all state secretariat staff over time.

By incorporating AI into governance, Uttar Pradesh aims to modernize its administration, making it more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven. The government hopes that AI will help officers work smarter and provide better services to the public.
