USTDA provides grant for transforming Hisar Airport into aviation hub in Haryana

The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has provided a technical assistance grant to the Haryana Airports Development Corporation Limited (HADC). The aim is to transform Hisar’s Maharaja Agrasen International Airport into a modern aviation hub. This redevelopment will focus on boosting cargo and logistics operations, increasing air cargo throughput, and enhancing the airport’s role in trade and investment.

Located in Haryana’s National Capital Region (NCR), Hisar Airport is set to become a significant player in India’s growing civil aviation sector. USTDA’s director, Enoh T. Ebong, emphasized the importance of this partnership. "This project strengthens supply chains, supports two-way trade, and allows U.S. companies to contribute advanced technology for implementation," Ebong said.

Enhancing infrastructure and trade

Operational since 1967, Hisar Airport has primarily served private aircraft and pilot training. Its location—a three-hour drive from the nearest international airport—has previously limited its potential for air cargo operations. The USTDA-funded redevelopment aims to address these limitations by creating a state-of-the-art cargo complex.

The grant also aligns with the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework’s goals and the U.S.-India Aviation Cooperation Programme. This public-private partnership fosters technical and policy collaboration between the civil aviation sectors of the two nations.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini highlighted the importance of the collaboration. "This agreement reflects a forward-looking vision and international cooperation. It will help position Hisar as a leading cargo hub," Saini stated. Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala added that domestic air travel from Hisar Airport is expected to commence by April.

U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti applauded the initiative, noting that the U.S. and India have collaborated on civil aviation projects since 2007. "Together, we are building the foundation for the future of aviation," he remarked.

The redevelopment project is expected to benefit local industries by strengthening supply chains and improving logistics. It is also likely to create opportunities for both U.S. and Indian businesses to collaborate on cutting-edge aviation technologies.
