Justice Guhanathan Narendar officially became the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court on Thursday. He was sworn in during a ceremony at the Raj Bhawan in Dehradun. The oath was administered by Uttarakhand Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (retd). Justice Narendar, who was previously serving as a judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, succeeds Justice Ritu Bahri. Justice Bahri had been appointed as Chief Justice earlier this year but retired on October 10.
A distinguished legal career
Justice Narendar’s elevation to Chief Justice was recommended by the collegium led by former Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud on September 24. The Centre issued the official notification for his promotion on December 23. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and several senior government officials were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Justice Narendar’s judicial career began in January 2015 when he was appointed to the Karnataka High Court. Later that year, in October, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He is recognized as the senior-most judge in his parent court.

Born on January 10, 1964, Justice Narendar enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in August 1989. He initially practiced at the Madras High Court from 1989 to 1992. By January 1996, he began independent practice, showcasing his expertise in legal matters.
The Uttarakhand High Court, established in 2000 after the state was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, has had a history of distinguished chief justices. Justice Ashok A. Desai served as the first Chief Justice of the court, which is based in Nainital. Justice Narendar’s appointment continues this tradition of excellence in leadership at the Uttarakhand High Court.
