Uttarkashi Mosque built on registered land, Official confirms legality

A mosque in Uttarkashi is legally built on registered land, according to a Uttarakhand police official. The mosque, which some right-wing groups claimed was illegal, is listed in the official land records under the names of four individuals. Amit Srivastava, the superintendent of police (SP) in Uttarkashi, confirmed that the mosque is not illegal and has been officially registered.

On September 9, the Sanyukt Sanatan Dharam Rakshak Sangh, a coalition of right-wing organizations, submitted a memorandum to Uttarkashi District Magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht. They demanded the mosque's demolition, arguing that it was not registered in the revenue records. The group also staged a public protest outside the District Magistrate’s office, giving a three-day deadline for action.

Committee formation and actions

In response, District Magistrate Bisht has formed a committee led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Bhatwari to review the land records related to the mosque. The committee's task is to examine the records and confirm the mosque's legality.

Bisht assured that once the committee submits its report, necessary legal actions will be taken. He emphasized that the district administration is committed to upholding the law and removing any illegal encroachments if found. The District Magistrate also appealed for cooperation from all parties to maintain peace and order in the district.
