Jardhari explained that the Chipko movement had two distinct phases. Initially, locals protested against outsiders exploiting forest resources, focusing on creating livelihood opportunities. Later, the movement shifted towards forest conservation. Notably, women played a pivotal role, although their contributions were often overlooked.
Evolution into Beej Bachao Andolan
The Chipko movement gave rise to various offshoots like the Beej Bachao Andolan, emphasizing the harmful impacts of chemical farming on forests and resources. These movements continue to be active, reflecting ongoing environmental concerns.
