WB Governor has called a special session
WB Governor has called a special session of the state legislature.
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar prorogued the state Assembly on Saturday. Prorogation is the process of ending a Parliamentary or legislative Assembly session without dissolving it.
Following allegations that he had issued the decision without consulting the ruling Trinamool Congress leadership, Dhankhar confirmed on Twitter that he had followed the West Bengal government's proposal.
The news came ahead of the state Assembly's Budget session, which was set to begin in either February or March. According to the sources the Trinamool Congress was considering filing a motion against Dhankhar for allegedly interfering with the state government's operations.
On Saturday, the governor said he was exercising his authority under Article 174 of the Constitution, which governs the prorogation and dissolution of state parliamentary meetings.
"I, Jagdeep Dhankhar, Governor of West Bengal, hereby prorogue the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from February 12, 2022," said the order.
According to PTI, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated the governor did not make the choice on his own. "He has prorogued the Assembly on the Cabinet's proposal," he added. "There isn't any ambiguity."
According to The Indian Express, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, a member of the Trinamool Congress in the Rajya Sabha, presented a resolution on Friday urging President Ram Nath Kovind to dismiss Dhankhar from his job.
Ray made the motion under Rule 170 of the Council of States Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business.
West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee barred Dhankar on Twitter on January 31 because of his anti-state government tweets.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also stated that she has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi multiple times requesting that Dhankhar be removed from his position as state governor. However, she said that no action has been taken thus far.
Since taking office in 2019, the governor and Banerjee have clashed on a number of occasions on a variety of issues.
