World University of Design hosts 15th International Conference on Doctoral Education in Design with over 150 delegates

The 15th International Conference on Doctoral Education in Design, hosted by the World University of Design in Sonipat, brought together design experts from around the world. This significant event was organized in partnership with Punjab-based RIMT University and marked the first time this biennial conference, managed by the European Academy of Design, was held in India.

The conference featured over 25 researchers who presented their work on various design-related topics. More than 150 delegates and invitees, including representatives from design universities, industry professionals, stakeholders, and doctoral students, attended the event.

Focusing on non-verbal design knowledge

Design in today's tech-driven world often relies on non-verbal communication, which isn't conveyed through words. This aspect of design, rooted in art rather than science, is crucial for making decisions about form, arrangement, and texture. However, it has often been overshadowed by the scientific aspect of knowledge, especially in the era of computers. The conference aimed to highlight the significance of non-verbal knowledge in shaping systems and emphasized the need for new paradigms to visualize and argue with representations of entire systems.

Impact on design education in India

Design professionals and academics at the conference discussed the transformation of traditional crafts using technology and design. They explored how design can enhance the versatility of traditional crafts in contemporary spaces. This perspective is critical as India transitions from being a vendor to a creator of good design. Research-based approaches in design education were also emphasized as they can lead to thought leadership, innovation, and better collaboration between academia and industry. Such efforts can contribute significantly to national development by influencing policy formulation and curriculum development.
