Protesters rally against Spain region’s leader after floods

Thousands protest against Leader of flood-hit region in Spain

Thousands of people gathered in Valencia, Spain, to demand the resignation of regional leader Carlos Mazon. They blamed him for his poor handling of the October floods, which were the country's worst natural disaster in decades. The disaster killed 232 people, most of them from the Valencia region.

The protesters carried pictures of their loved ones who died in the floods and shouted slogans like "Mazon resign" and "Mazon in prison." Some held banners calling him a "murderer" and accusing him of incompetence. A large cardboard cutout showed Mazon with blood-stained hands.

Criticism over emergency response

In Spain, regional governments manage emergency situations, so Mazon was responsible for the response. Many residents received flood alerts too late, after the water had already destroyed their homes. People were stranded without food, water, or electricity for days, depending on volunteers for help.

Mazon also faced criticism for giving different accounts of where he was when the floods started. Opposition leaders called for his removal, saying he had lost public support despite having a majority in parliament. However, Mazon refused to resign and promised to continue leading recovery efforts until 2027.
