The cleaning of the Yamuna River has started just days before the BJP government takes charge in Delhi. The plan follows a promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make the river pollution-free.
Officials at Raj Niwas confirmed that different machines, such as trash skimmers, weed harvesters, and a dredger, are being used to clean the river. The project aims to remove garbage, silt, and pollutants from the river.
Four-step plan for cleaning
The Yamuna cleaning strategy has four main steps. The first is to remove waste and silt from the river and clean major drains like Najafgarh drain and supplementary drain.
The second step focuses on monitoring sewage treatment plants (STPs) to ensure they work efficiently. New STPs will also be built to treat 400 million gallons of sewage per day.

The third step is to ensure coordination between different agencies like the Delhi Jal Board, environment department, and municipal corporation. Lastly, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) will closely watch industries to prevent the discharge of untreated wastewater into the river.
This cleaning project is expected to take about three years. Regular weekly reviews will be conducted to check progress. Officials believe that with proper planning, the Yamuna can be made cleaner and pollution-free.
